Professional Development for Afterschool Professionals

OregonASK recognizes the crucial link between what children and youth experience in afterschool programs and the skills and knowledge of the program staff who work with them. To assist in improving the overall quality of afterschool programs in Oregon, OregonASK and its partners are creating ways to develop and support the professional development infrastructure by:

  • Creating Core Competencies that will lead to an Afterschool Certificate and Credential Program.
  • Creating and supporting a system of training and other professional development opportunities that is widely accessible.
  • Linking training opportunities to current statewide systems such as the Childhood Care and Education Registry.
  • Supporting professional development through identifying and supporting trainers, making accessible standardized state curriculum and providing technical assistance and resources.
  • Ensuring that afterschool is recognized and supported at statewide committees and conferences.

Core Competencies

Core Competencies are an important first step towards a professional certificate and credential for afterschool staff.  To create core competencies that meet the broad range of expertise of the field, OregonASK held focus group discussions and reviews from providers to ensure that all four areas of the afterschool field; Education, Recreation, Child Care and Youth Development were recognized. The goal of the core competencies is to provide a framework that will guide policy makers, staff and programs towards the development of the profession and the field.

What Research Tells Us

“…the bottom line of many after school studies is that one of the most
critical features of high-quality programs necessary for achieving positive
outcomes is the quality of a program’s staff.”
