Afterschool Professional Development

Core Competencies

(Click above to view)

“…the bottom line of many after school studies is that one of the most critical features of high-quality programs necessary for achieving positive outcomes is the quality of a program’s staff.”

-Harvard Family Research Project 2-2008

OregonASK recognizes the crucial link between what children and youth experience in afterschool programs and the skills and knowledge of the program staff who work with them. To assist in improving the overall quality of afterschool programs in Oregon, OregonASK and its partners are creating ways to develop and support the professional development infrastructure by:

* Ensuring that afterschool is recognized and supported on state level professional development committees.
* Encouraging and facilitating the development of systems of training.
* Supporting professional development by identifying and supporting trainers.
* Providing technical assistance and resources.
* Educating afterschool professionals using Oregon's Core Competencies which can lead to an School-Age Credential through our partners at the Oregon Center for Career Development (OCCD).

2011 Oregon Afterschool Conference Report!

It was our tremendous honor to spend Saturday, October 22, with over 250 afterschool professionals and content specialists at the French Prairie Middle School in Woodburn, Oregon. From the sincere validation that your work is being seen and appreciated and the inspiring charge to leadership that Adrian Haugabook brought us from the National Afterschool Association; through every one of the breakout sessions ranging from program sustainability and grant writing, to behavior management and youth development - this year's conference was inspiring!

A special thank you to Karen Armstrong, the director of the afterschool program at French Prairie, and all of the teachers, custodians and maintenance staff who hosted our conference with extreme graciousness and generosity. We appreciate you immensely! Thank you to the Woodburn School District for their support and hospitality!

Also, a thank you to the partner organizations and steering committee members who's help was crucial to the set up, tear down and everything in between!

We hope that those of you who attended were inspired and encouraged towards our shared goal of providing quality out of school spaces for kids in Oregon!
